According to a new study, Saffron, a popular but pricy spice, may enhance sleep quality in individuals who have trouble sleeping. The study was conducted by the same group that previously connected Saffron to an antidepressant effect, at least in persons with mild to moderate depression taking antidepressant medication prescribed by a doctor.

Saffron is a popular spice that comes from the saffron crocus flower. The spice looks like a scarlet thread and is harvested from crocus blooms, making it more difficult to obtain in big numbers than other spices. As a result, authentic Saffron is the world’s most costly spice.

Despite its high price, this spice is widely used as a supplement and an ingredient, with some people believing that it has various health benefits. Previous research has revealed that one of these benefits may help patients with mild to moderate depression reduce their symptoms.

According to a new Murdoch University study, Saffron may also enhance sleep quality in those who don’t have depression and are physically well yet report poor sleep quality night after night. The individuals in the trial had been off medication for at least four weeks before the start of the study.

The researchers discovered that Saffron enhances sleep quality, but there’s a catch: the study used a pharmaceutical-grade saffron extract called ‘affron,’ which was dosed at 14 mg twice daily. The positive impacts on sleep quality were observed during the first week of the trial, but more research with bigger groups of people is required.

Some people may struggle to receive the same advantages from raw, dried Saffron or over-the-counter pills because the study used a standardized saffron extract.

According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, the extract from Saffron gave participants sweet dreams, not the spice itself. The researchers looked at 55 participants ranging in age from 18 to 70 who said they had sleep issues. They were administered 14 mg of saffron extract twice a day for 28 days and discovered that it relieved their insomnia and enhanced their sleep quality.

However, this isn’t the first time saffron extract has grabbed the news for its medicinal properties. Dr. Oz praised the spice supplement in 2012 for its ability to control hunger and prevent over-snacking in between meals. It was very efficient at reducing sugar cravings, resulting in rapid weight loss.

Saffron has been shown in multiple trials to help with anxiety, depression, overall mood, and better sleep and weight loss. No, it’s not simply that individuals are happy when they get enough sleep and maintain a healthy weight; research has discovered that Saffron increases the balance of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin hormones, all of which have a role in our emotional and mental health.

Saffron is widely regarded as the most costly spice on the planet. It can also assist with insomnia, but don’t worry; you won’t have to break the bank to obtain a decent night’s sleep. You won’t have to worry about the price of the saffron extract being as high as the price of the pure spice (only one ounce is said to cost $72.95). To get all the saffron goodness, just take one capsule twice a day.

More research is needed to prove the benefits of saffron extract, but these health benefits for sleeplessness, weight reduction, and mood are an excellent place to start.
