Women use saffron to treat menstruation cramps and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). It helps men avoid early orgasm (early ejaculation) and infertility.

Saffron is also used to boost sexual desire (aphrodisiac) and to cause sweating. For baldness, some people apply saffron directly to the scalp (alopecia). Saffron is a spice, yellow food color, and flavoring component used in food. Saffron extracts are used in the manufacture of perfumes and as a dye for fabric.

Side effects of consuming a lot of saffron.

When taken as a medicine for up to 6 weeks, saffron is probably safe for most people. Dry mouth, anxiety, dizziness, sleepiness, nausea, appetite change, and headache are possible adverse effects. Some patients may experience allergic responses.

Taking a lot of saffron by mouth could be dangerous. Poisoning can result in yellow skin, eyes, mucous membranes, vomiting, dizziness, bloody diarrhea, bleeding from the nose, lips, and eyelids, numbness, and other significant adverse effects. Doses of 12-20 grams have been known to cause death.

Warnings and Special Precautions of consuming too much saffron

Breastfeeding and pregnancy:

Taking saffron by mouth in proportions more remarkable than those found in food is likely to be harmful. Saffron at higher doses can cause the uterus to contract, which can lead to a miscarriage. There isn’t enough information on the safety of using saffron while breastfeeding. To be on the safe side, avoid using it.

Bipolar disorder:

Saffron appears to have the ability to alter one’s mood. People with bipolar disorder are concerned that it will cause excitability and impulsive behavior (mania). If you have this condition, avoid using saffron.

Allergies to the plant species Lolium, Olea (which includes olives), and Salsola:

Saffron may cause allergic reactions in people who are allergic to certain plants.

Heart problems:

Saffron may affect the rate and strength of heartbeats. Large doses of saffron may aggravate some heart problems.

Blood pressure is low:

Saffron has been shown to reduce blood pressure. In persons with low blood pressure, too much saffron may cause their blood pressure to drop too low.
